TALK IN WORKSHOPT AT NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY. 5th November 2015.

I am delivering a paper in the workshop ‘Shared Spaces, Shared Memories, Shared Visions: Contemporary Visual Representations of the Second World War in German Cities’ organized by Newcastle University (Newcastle, UK) next 5th of November 2015.

My paper The artwork as countermonument. Nazi period commemoration and memory in contemporary art, is framed within the practice of Contemporary art and its links with Cultural Memory. It will explore the notion of James E. Young’s ‘countermonument’ by way of identifying common features of contemporary artworks that address the issue of memory from Nazi period. Such artworks have developed some of the commemorative features that are frequently associated with the monument and commemorative practices in the civic ceremonies.

In this paper I will present some countermonuments and identify their main patterns, which will be employed for analyzing the works of Christian Boltanski, Rachel Whiteread, Krzysztof Wodiczko, Shimon Attie or Miroswla Balka. They are just some examples of contemporary artists working in this field and will be used to explore the countermonument in this paper.
